Here is a further update on Donald Trump’s election campaign. Make sure to keep yourself aware of all the latest developments!:
Conservatives have always had plenty of reasons to like Maine Gov. Paul LePage.
He’s been a thorn in the Obama administration’s side when it comes to putting a stop to food stamps being used for junk food. His wife had jaws dropping this summer when she took a job waiting tables at a Portland restaurant to make spending money of her own.
But LePage’s confrontation this week with a Democrat state lawmaker who allegedly called him a “racist” was one for the books.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the brouhaha started when LePage told reporters the vast majority of the big-time dealers behind the heroin epidemic that’s plaguing his state and much of the country are “black and Hispanic people.”
On Thursday, he was questioned by a television reporter, who told him that a Democrat lawmaker, state Rep. Drew Gattine, had called him a “racist” for the remark about the heritage of the heroin pushers.
Enraged, LePage left an expletive-laced voice mail for the Democrat who works as a health care program manager when not serving in the legislature.
Check it out here. Warning: Very strong language:
“Mr. Gattine, this is Gov. Paul Richard LePage,” the voice on the recording said. “I would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you [expletive]. I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I’m a racist. I’ve spent my life helping black people and you little son-of-a-bi**h, socialist [expletive]. You … I need you to, just friggin. I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.”
But LePage didn’t stop there. In an interview with another television news crew, he said he wished he could settle the score the old-fashioned way, with a duel between the two parties.
“When a snot-nosed little guy from Westbrook calls me a racist, now I’d like him to come up here because, tell you right now, I wish it were 1825,” LePage said. “And we would have a duel, that’s how angry I am, and I would not put my gun in the air, I guarantee you, I would not be (Alexander) Hamilton. I would point it right between his eyes, because he is a snot-nosed little runt and he has not done a damn thing since he’s been in this Legislature to help move the state forward.”
For his part, Rep. Gattine denied calling the governor a racist, claiming that LePage had made “racially charged comments.”
Fortunately – or unfortunately, as the case might be – there will be no pistols drawn at sunrise this time. On Friday, LePage offered an apology for his voicemail message, the Press Herald reported, but said he was justified in being enraged.
He also made it pretty clear he didn’t have much use for name-calling liberals in the Pine Tree State.
“When someone calls me a racist, I take it very seriously. I didn’t know Drew Gattine from a hole in the wall until yesterday. It made me enormously angry when a TV reporter asked me for my reaction about Gattine calling me a racist,” he said.
“It is the absolute worst, most vile thing you can call a person. So I called Gattine and used the worst word I could think of. I apologize for that to the people of Maine, but I make no apology for trying to end the drug epidemic that is ravaging our state. Legislators like Gattine would rather be politically correct and protect ruthless drug dealers than work with me to stop this crisis that is killing five Mainers a week.”
Democrats, of course, being the class act they are, responded to LePage’s apology by demanding his resignation.
To be fair to the Democrats, it doesn’t sound like LePage is all that sorry, but he doesn’t have much reason to be. Other than the foul language (and he didn’t even need it), his point was that in the Democrat worldview, anyone who points out obvious, demonstrable facts must be a “racist” if those facts make liberals uncomfortable.
Granted, that might not be really worth shooting someone over, but it is one more reason for conservatives to root for Governor LePage.
