This is yet another update on Donald Trump’s Presidential campaign. Remember to keep yourself in the loop!:
It’s funny what Barack Obama’s IRS finds time for — “funny” in a wretched sort of way.
In the run-up to the president’s re-election in 2012, the agency found plenty of time to devote extra scrutiny to conservative groups seeking to educate the American public about the disastrous effects Obama’s progressive policies — including his position on illegal immigration — were having on the country’s future.
Now, it turns out the same IRS, at the very same time, knew that some of the illegal aliens Obama wanted to reward with amnesty were working in the United States under stolen Social Security numbers. But what’s even worse than the crime of identity theft that affected more than 1 million American taxpayers was the IRS’s failure to report it.
Maybe all those Revenue agents and their supervisors were just too consumed with trying to figure out how to handle the additional burdens Obamacare imposed on the system. For whatever reason, the Internal Revenue Service couldn’t find time to let the victims of identity theft by illegals even know about it.
The revelation of this irresponsible behavior by the folks who can marshal the power of the United States against a delinquent taxpayer came in a Treasury Department Inspector General’s report released this week. It documents how, during a four-year period straddling President Obama’s first and second terms, the IRS was aware of at least 1.1 million cases where illegal aliens were working in the United States using the stolen Social Security numbers of American citizens.
Yet the agency never put a process in place to alert the true owners of the numbers that their financial well-being, and credit history, were at risk.
According to the Inspector General’s report:
During the period February 2011 to December 2015, the IRS identified almost 1.1 million taxpayers who were victims of employment-related identity theft.
Republican lawmakers, who have been trying to rein in the IRS since even before the targeting scandal broke in 2013, were infuriated by the development.
“It is stunning that the IRS has chosen to aid and abet identity thieves for so long instead of protecting the innocent victims of the theft,” Sen. Daniel Coats, R-Ind., said in a statement.
According to the Washington Times, illegal aliens use the stolen Social Security numbers to provide information to businesses are required to obtain before hiring an employee. However, the Times reported, “employers are prohibited from probing too deeply into numbers, even when they suspect fraud.”
According to the latest report, the Inspector General warned after a 2011 audit that the IRS was in a “unique position” to flag cases where a stolen or fraudulent Social Security number was being used to file taxes and recommended that the agency develop a system to warn innocent Americans that their taxpayers’ identity had been stolen.
In response, the agency established a pilot program in 2014 that identified and contacted only about 25,000 potential identity theft victims, warning of their vulnerability – but ended up canceling it due to a “lack of funding and other competing priorities,” the Inspector General’s report noted.
Fair enough. Any organization the size of the Internal Revenue Service is going to have to set priorities.
According to a Wall Street Journal report on the 2013 government shutdown, the agency had almost 100,000 employees. The same year, it processed more than 235 million tax returns, according to the IRS itself. With that many people, and that big of a workload, establishing clear priorities is important.
But that’s exactly the point.
The IRS has had time to make a priority of singling out groups with conservative goals for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax exempt status, and targeting individuals for personal and business audits when they set up groups to prevent voter fraud.
Yet a “lack of funding and other competing priorities” have stopped the agency from notifying American taxpayers that they were victimized by the same illegal aliens that President Obama has been trying to make legal citizens since his party lost the Senate in 2014?
An individual, a group, or a government agency finds time for what’s really important. To Barack Obama’s IRS, protecting Americans from illegal aliens clearly isn’t important.
Just like protecting America from illegal aliens isn’t important to the president.
